It’s January 2026 and I’m already behind on my dumb “eat at every top Yelp spot” mission that I started like three years ago and still haven’t finished. Partly because life happens. Partly because some of these places are straight-up not worth the parking nightmare.
Yelp’s latest Places to Eat list for 2026 dropped a month or so back and it’s the usual rollercoaster. Some classics hanging on, some new kids crashing the party, a couple spots I’ve been to and can confirm are fire, and at least one I went to and felt personally betrayed by.

I’m not proud of it but I’m that guy who sees a 4.8 rating with 3,000+ reviews and thinks “okay this has to be life-changing.” Spoiler alert: sometimes it is. Sometimes it’s just… food.
Like last October I finally hit up that barbecue place in Austin everyone was screaming about. Drove two states over on a whim. Waited 90 minutes in line. Got the brisket. Cried a little (quietly, in the corner like an adult). Still think about it weekly.
But then there’s the flip side. That one “best tacos in America” truck in Portland? Waited forever. Tacos were fine. Like… Chili’s-level fine. I ate them in silence while my friend kept saying “these changed my life” and I was just sitting there like bro did we eat the same thing??

- Still seeing a ton of love for places like Holbox down in LA. I went in 2025 and yeah… the aguachile ruined me for regular ceviche forever. Worth the hour wait? Barely. Worth the memory? 100%.
- Taste of Texas in Houston keeps hanging around the top 20-ish. I ate there once and basically blacked out from happiness. Their rolls are dangerous. I ordered six. Ate six. No regrets until the bill.
- Newer ones climbing fast: some ramen joint in Chicago I haven’t tried yet but the photos look stupid good. Also this tiny Filipino spot in Vegas that people are losing their minds over. Planning a dumb weekend trip just for it probably.

The Parts That Suck About Chasing Most Popular Restaurants in the US Ranked by Reviews
Hype is a double-edged sword dude.
Once a place hits #1 the wait becomes two hours minimum, service gets rushed, and half the crowd is just there to post Stories. I’ve left good meals feeling weirdly empty because the energy was off.
Also prices creep up fast. That $18 burger in 2024 is $26 now because “we’re popular sorry.” I get it. I still grumble every time.
Stuff I’ve Learned (The Hard & Expensive Way)
- Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually less insane.
- If every recent review mentions “long wait” or “rushed,” maybe skip.
- The 3.5–4 star places with passionate long reviews are often better than the perfect 5-star ones.
- Bring snacks for the car. Hangry me makes terrible decisions.
- And seriously… sometimes the local diner nobody’s talking about beats the list. I had the best patty melt of my life at some random spot in Ohio last summer. Zero reviews. Pure joy.
Look, I’m not saying ignore the most popular restaurants in the US ranked by reviews. They’re popular for reasons. But don’t treat them like religion either. Half the fun is the chase, the other half is admitting when something’s mid and moving on.
